as depressing as these results seem, i'm shocked that people ( in the threads at both metafilter and OkCupid ) are surprised by this information. i am also surprised that people consider this to be evidence of racism.
innate preferences cannot be racist. it's like saying that gay men who only want to date men are sexist!
there are many logical explanations for the disparity in the reply rates between races. first of all, people who choose to date online are people who are seeking out exactly what they want. they will be picky, extraordinarily so. so the data is already skewed because the participants aren't necessarily an accurate representation of society as a whole.
but with that said; yes, society's preferential treatment of white people is one of many things that factor into the way people select their mates. that really goes without saying. just because America's elected a half-black guy for president doesn't mean we live in a post-racial world. white people are preferred because they are perceived to be wealthier, more attractive, and superior over other races. whether you like it or not.
furthermore, a lot of our preferences for mates are actually hardwired. there are a lot of subconscious processes occurring when selecting or searching for a mate. men, for example, are subconsciously able to tell when a female is ovulating. women, in turn, subconsciously make themselves more attractive ( by dressing nicer for example ) as ovulation approaches. additionally, people tend be attracted to those whose immune systems are different from theirs--it encourages healthier offspring.
there's a lot of biology in attraction, whether we're conscious of it or not. it's really not a stretch to postulate what most white people are attracted to, for the most part, other white people. same thing goes for other races. generally we're attracted to people who resemble ourselves, in one way or another. of course, i don't mean to simplify things. attraction is attraction, and it can happen between people of any race.
the phenomenon presented on OkCupid is probably truly the result of CLASSISM--black women suffer the most because they are perceived as being the worst off! just LOOK at the way the media ( Hollywood, the Maury show, Jerry Springer, Wendy Williams, )portrays black women. they are reduced to CARICATURES. so does it shock you that black women don't receive preferential treatment on dating sites?
i won't even go into the reason why white men get the most responses. self-explanatory.
i'll use myself as an example: i've never been attracted to any black or asian men. it just doesn't happen. skin color is completely irrelevant to me, but i find defined, sharp features to be preferable. typically, black and asian men do not have that. i guess that makes me a racist...
although just because i've never found a black or asian man attractive, it doesn't mean i never will. i suppose there's an important distinction to be made between "i WON'T ever date someone of X race" and "i've never been attracted to someone of X race".
what do you think? is it racist to have racial preferences when it comes to mate selection?

i just realized that i never updated re: the job situation--if anyone wants to know the lowdown about brooklyn industries, here it is:
-office located in a warehouse, 15 minute walk from the G line in an 'okay' neighborhood
-no AC/heat
-mice
-NO AC/HEAT!!!!
-long hours, lots of possible overtime ( with no pay )
-horrid office/disorganisation RAMPANT
i had a great interview with them and they wrote me a bit after the interview and said they were impressed with my qualifications (it quickly became clear to both me and the interviewer that i was overqualified)--but they turned me down. ( apparently they have my resume on file, but it would a massive amount of desperation to consider working with them, knowing what i know now. ) but in all seriousness, i would hope that they gave the job to somebody who was truly in need of it.
my current boss actually got a past coworker of hers ( who lasted at BKI for 5 months ) to attempt to talk me out of the taking the job ( if they were to offer it). interesting times.
anyway, current employer is making me an art director. i'm getting a raise. also, got a new Mac Pro at work. the thing is top of the line. and massive. very massive.
that'll be enough to shut me up for the time being.

panic attack on the train this morning.
the subway is the WORST place to experience an episode. i don't know how i made it to work. my vision was 80% clouded, like static television.
i usually make a point of leaving a bit early for work so i can catch the less crowded subway cars--this morning i left regular time, and thus the trains were packed. My mind was playing games on me, imagining that for some reason the air was "bad" and that I wasn't able to breathe properly. of course, under normal circumstances, it's not very pleasant to stuck in a train car, packed like sardines. for some reason i couldn't take it this morning.
however i was also reading a book, and there was mention of blood in it, which is a tired and true psychological trigger for me.
so i was stuck in a packed train car, having an attack, and unable to sit down. people got off the train at 34th, freeing up some seats, so i sat down and began to recover...but the next stop was 42nd, and i had to get off...in retrospect i should have stayed on the train, because the next seven minutes of making my way to work were pure hell. i can't describe the terror of being swept into an anonymous mass of people, fighting the biological urge to collapse or faint.
won't make that same mistake again, that's for sure.
on the bright side, today i'm cashing a hefty check for a freelance job i did a couple weeks ago. so all is well that ends well, i guess :D

YESSS SUMMER IS OVER YESS
well not quite, but the weather was spectacular yesterday. goodbye, gross humidity. goodbye, intolerably hot subway platforms. goodbye, electric bill.
i want to be back in school. not just for the sake of getting an MA, but i genuinely want to learn something new and become more disciplined. i think i have focus issues, so many ideas constantly running through my mind that i really can't sit down and concentrate on something. it seems to reflect especially in my 'art', as it severely lacks focus and as usual, i'm lagging behind my peers. i'm not doubting i have technical ability--my problem is self-imposed and whatever it is i'm doing, i'm doing by choice.
if it was my job to make a graphic novel, or if my life and well-being depended on it, then i would do it.
and that's totally wrong--if i was a real artist, then i'd just make the graphic novel no matter what the situation. the past couple of years i've been coming to terms with the reality that i don't really have the desire to make a lot of art, and that includes drawing. i might not be in a psychologically good place right now, but it's hard to tell when you're in the moment. the good news is that i feel okay about all this--like everything will eventually culminate into something. i don't just know what it is yet.

Brooklyn Industries has contacted me! if all goes well on the interview and i get a position with them, this could mean no more commuting to midtown! FUCK /YES/.
also, the company i'm freelancing for wants me to go to California for a meet-up/interview! ( all expenses paid ) they're so fucking awesome. it's crazy that they're willing to invest time and money in a potential employee that lives literally on the opposite side of the country.

I have been offered a better job....

( currently in NYC )
well, that figures.
( interestingly, the majority of graphics positions in the t-shirt industry are located in California. California is pretty much the center of the t-shirt graphics industry. that's where the jobs are. i suppose if i wanted to become a guru in the industry, the correct thing to do would be to move my ass over there. )
however, don't really /want/ to be a t-shirt guru....would like to do /more/ than graphics...
ugh, decisions.

finally, lots of stuff going on for me in terms of freelance work.
- the guy who does Duke-Winston ( Churchill FTW! ) wants me to do some work for him
- Juna Studio wants to "represent" me as an artist.
- Currently freelancing for Fifth Sun
- Will soon be freelancing for the steve martino group
- Applied to Brooklyn Industries ( for a full-time position), probably won't hear back from them. ( they were asking for 5 years exp. )
this means a lot of extra money rolling in, and hopefully feeling less emasculated re: my Progress in Life. the extra money won't make me necessarily happier, but i'll /feel/ more prestigious, i suppose.
i don't fully understand the incessant urge to tear myself down ( objectively, i am not doing poorly ), but it's probably one of the things that keep me motivated to press on.
ALSO. clothes. can't resist the urge to keep eyes peeled for new stuff. i hope this translates into a useful character flaw that i can eventually make money off of by coming out with a line of my own someday. between the graphic novel, freelance fashion illustration, and writing gay fiction...good god, i'm all over the place. FOCUS on one thing, for fuck's sake!
